Guide
How Often Should I Come?
One of the first practical questions people ask is how often therapy should happen — weekly, every other week, once a month? The honest answer is that it depends on you and what you are carrying, but there are some reliable guideposts. Here is how I think about it.
Weekly Is the Usual Starting Point, and Why
Most people begin weekly, and for good reason. Therapy works through momentum — each session builds on the one before it. A week is long enough to live some life between sessions and short enough that we do not spend half the hour catching up. Especially at the beginning, when we are still learning the shape of things, weekly rhythm makes a real difference.
Sessions are 50 to 60 minutes, held Monday through Thursday between 9am and 6pm, online from wherever in California you happen to be.
When to Space Out
As the work settles, spacing out often makes sense. Some people move to every other week once the acute season has passed; others shift to monthly sessions as a kind of ongoing maintenance. There is no prize for either frequency. The right interval is the one where you still have something alive to bring and enough time between sessions to live with what we have discussed.
This is a conversation we have openly and revisit as things change — including in the harder direction. If life spikes, we can always tighten the rhythm again.
How Long People Typically Stay
It varies enormously, and honest therapists say so. Some people come for a specific season — a divorce, a loss, a transition — and feel complete in a matter of months. Others find that deeper work, the kind that reshapes old patterns, takes a year or more and is worth every month of it. Both are legitimate shapes for a therapy to take.
You are never locked in. We review how it is going as we go, and the decision to continue, pause, or end is always ultimately yours.
