Does Online Therapy Work?
The short answer is yes, for most people and most concerns — the research on video therapy has become quite clear on this. The longer answer is more useful: online therapy works very well for some situations, and some people genuinely are better served in person or by a higher level of care. Here is an honest version of both.
The Evidence, in Plain Terms
Study after study has found that therapy delivered by secure video produces outcomes comparable to in-person therapy for the concerns most adults bring: anxiety, depression, grief, relationship struggles, life transitions. The relationship — the thing that matters most — forms across a screen more easily than skeptics expect.
Something else happened that the studies did not fully predict: many people prefer it. No commute, no waiting room, the dog at your feet, your own tea. For people with demanding jobs, small children, health limitations, or simply full lives, online sessions are often the difference between therapy that happens and therapy that keeps getting postponed.
Who It Suits Well
Online therapy tends to suit adults working through exactly the things I focus on: grief and loss, relationship trauma, separation and divorce, pregnancy and parenting transitions. If you have a private space, a reliable connection, and a camera, you have what you need. And because I am licensed in California, you can work with me from anywhere in the state.
Who Is Better Served Elsewhere
Honesty matters here. Online therapy is not the right container for everyone. People in acute crisis, or needing a level of support beyond weekly sessions — such as intensive outpatient or inpatient care — need more than I can offer through a screen. Some people also simply do their best thinking in a room with another person, and that preference deserves respect.
If I believe you would be better served elsewhere, I will tell you that directly and help you think through it. That is part of the job.
