Therapy for
Depression
People expect depression to look like sadness, so when what you have is flatness, it is easy to miss, or to dismiss. Nothing is technically wrong. You just cannot locate the point of anything.
If getting through an ordinary day takes everything you have, that is worth taking seriously, whether or not you ever cry.
Flat, Not Sad
Depression often presents as an absence rather than a feeling. Food tastes like nothing. Music you loved does not reach you. You watch yourself go through your life the way you might watch a television left on in another room.
There can also be a heavy irritability, a shorter fuse, a body that feels like it weighs twice what it should. Many people, especially high-functioning ones, do not identify this as depression at all. They call it being lazy, or broken, or just how things are now.
Part of our early work is simply giving you an accurate name for what is happening, because the self-blame layered on top of depression is often half the weight.
When Your World Gets Smaller
Depression shrinks life by subtraction. You stop answering the friend. You stop the hobby. You decline the invitation because you cannot imagine having the energy, and each cancellation makes the next one easier.
Eventually your world narrows to work, home, and the couch, and the narrowing itself deepens the depression, because the things that once fed you are exactly what got cut.
We map this shrinkage together, without judgment, because it is usually the first place change becomes possible.
Doing the Next Thing Before You Feel Like It
The cruel mechanics of depression are that motivation follows action, not the other way around. Waiting to feel like it means waiting indefinitely.
So we work behaviorally, in steps small enough to be almost insulting. A shower counts. A ten-minute walk counts. Texting one person back counts. This is not toxic positivity. It is how the machinery restarts.
Alongside that, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps you carry the flatness without letting it make every decision, and we look honestly at whether what your life shrank down to was ever the right size for you in the first place.
