Therapy for
High-Functioning Anxiety
You deliver. You are early. You are the person other people describe as having it together, and you have never once felt that way from the inside.
Anxiety that produces good outcomes is very easy to keep, because everyone around you is being rewarded by it.
Anxiety That Looks Like Competence
The over-preparing, the rereading of emails, the arriving twenty minutes early, the mental rehearsal of a conversation that will take four minutes. From outside it reads as conscientiousness.
Inside, it is closer to a low continuous hum that only quiets when a task is finished, and then relocates to the next one. Rest does not feel restful, it feels like something is being neglected.
That is why so many people wait years before mentioning it. Nothing has fallen apart, so it does not seem to qualify.
The Cost Nobody Sees
It usually shows up in the body first. Clenched jaw, shallow breathing, a stomach that reacts before you know you are worried, sleep that runs a review of the day at three in the morning.
It shows up in relationships as short patience at home, because the composure has been spent in public. The people who get the least of you are often the ones you love most, which then generates its own guilt.
And it narrows life. You stop doing things where you might be a beginner, because being visibly bad at something is intolerable when your worth is built on performance.
Why "You Seem Fine" Lands So Badly
When someone says it, they mean it as reassurance. What you hear is that the effort is invisible, and that you would need to actually collapse before anyone took it seriously.
Our work is not about making you less capable. It is about separating what you do from whether you are allowed to be all right, so that competence stops being the price of existing.
Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we practice letting anxious thoughts be present without obeying them, and we look at what you would spend your energy on if it were not going here.
