Therapy for

# Postpartum Anxiety

The baby is finally asleep and you cannot be, because your mind is running images you would never say out loud, and your body will not stand down.

Postpartum anxiety is at least as common as postpartum depression and far less recognized, which means many new parents suffer through it believing it is just what loving a baby feels like.

## Intrusive Thoughts That Terrify You

Unwanted images of harm coming to the baby are one of the most common and most secret experiences of new parenthood. They arrive uninvited, they feel horrifying, and parents are often too frightened of what they might mean to tell anyone.

Here is what matters: these thoughts are common, they are treatable, and they do not mean you will act on them. Distress at the thought is the sign it is anxiety, not intent.

There is one exception to say plainly. If the thoughts stop feeling unwanted, or you feel you might act, or you are seeing or hearing things others do not, that warrants urgent support the same day, through your doctor, the 988 line, or an emergency room. Everything short of that belongs in therapy, and therapy works.

## Hypervigilance Mistaken for Good Parenting

Checking the breathing. Checking it again. Not sleeping when the baby sleeps because someone has to watch. Reading about every hazard until prevention becomes a full-time occupation.

From the outside this can look like devotion, and it gets praised, which is part of the trap. From the inside it is a nervous system that has decided disaster is always one lapse of attention away, and that you are the only thing standing in front of it.

We work on turning the alarm down without turning your love down, because those are different systems, even though anxiety insists they are the same.

## Why This Gets Missed

Screening at pediatric visits focuses on depression, and anxious new parents often do not recognize themselves in those questions. They are not sad. They are wired, watchful, and unable to exhale.

Partners and grandparents may not see it either, because the vigilance produces a very well-cared-for baby and a parent who looks capable right up until they admit they have not relaxed in months.

If any of this is familiar, that recognition is enough reason to reach out. You do not need to qualify for anything.
