Therapy for

# Loneliness

Your calendar is full. Your phone has numbers in it. And you cannot remember the last time a conversation went anywhere below the surface.

Loneliness in a full life is one of the most common things people bring to therapy and one of the hardest to say out loud, because it sounds ungrateful.

## Lonely Inside a Full Life

You can be married, employed, surrounded by colleagues and family, and still feel fundamentally unmet. Loneliness is not about the number of people around you. It is about whether anyone in your life knows what is actually happening in you.

Many people describe a life of logistics: schedules coordinated, meals managed, small talk exchanged, while the real material, the fear, the doubt, the wanting, stays unsaid because there is no obvious place to put it.

That gap is painful in a specific way, because it comes with shame. You have what you are supposed to want, so the loneliness feels like evidence of a defect rather than a signal.

## Friendship After Forty

The structures that used to make friends for you are gone. No dorm, no first job cohort, no playground parents unless you engineered it. Adult friendship requires deliberate effort at exactly the life stage with the least spare time.

It also requires risking being the one who suggests something, follows up, and tries again after a lukewarm response. For many people that risk feels closer to dating than they would like to admit.

We work on this practically: where connection is actually available to you, how to move a relationship from acquaintance to real, and how to survive the awkward middle without retreating.

## The Risk of Being Known

Under most chronic loneliness there is a protection. Being known means being judged, or being a burden, or confirming the quiet fear that the real you would not be kept.

That fear usually has a history, often a family where feelings were unwelcome, or friendships that punished honesty. The protection made sense once. Now it keeps company out and calls the result proof that no one would stay.

Therapy is itself practice for this. Being fully known by one person, on purpose, weekly, and discovering that the catastrophe does not arrive.
