Therapy for

# The Empty Nest

You spent eighteen years being needed every single day, and then it stopped, all at once, on a weekend in August, and everyone around you called it a milestone.

The house is quiet in a way that is not peaceful. If you are struggling with that, you are in large company and entitled to every bit of it.

## An Identity Built on Being Needed

Parenting young children is totalizing. Your schedule, your body, your attention, your sense of purpose, all of it organized around people who needed you hourly.

When that ends, the question underneath is not really what to do with the free time. It is who you are when no one needs you to be anyone. Many parents have not had to answer that question in two decades.

We treat that as real work, not a hobby-shopping exercise. The identity that comes next gets built deliberately, and it usually draws on parts of you that have been shelved since before the children arrived.

## A Marriage That Has to Be Re-Met

Many couples discover that the children were the marriage's main content for years, and that the two adults left at the table are near-strangers who love each other.

This is disorienting, and it is also one of the more hopeful situations I see, because the raw material is usually still there. It has simply not been attended to in a very long time.

Some couples also find the quiet surfaces problems the busy years were covering. That is harder, and worth facing now rather than in another decade.

## Grief Nobody Thinks You Are Entitled To

Your child is thriving at college, which is the best possible outcome, so your grief gets treated as self-indulgent, including by you. You catch yourself apologizing for missing them.

But something real ended. The daily version of your child, the family as a household, the role you woke up into for eighteen years. You are allowed to mourn things that ended well.

We make room for the grief without it becoming a reason to hold on too tight, and we work on building a relationship with the adult your child is becoming rather than only grieving the one who left.
