Therapy for

# Emotionally Immature Parents

Nothing dramatic may have happened. On paper it was a fine childhood, and you have never quite been able to explain why it left you so alone.

When a parent cannot hold their own feelings, a child learns to hold them instead. That arrangement usually looks, from the outside, like a very well-behaved kid.

## A Childhood Spent Managing an Adult

You learned to read a mood from the sound of a door. You knew which topics to avoid, which day of the week was risky, how to head off an outburst before it arrived.

That is real work, and children who do it get praised for maturity rather than asked how they are. The skill stays with you: you still scan every room, still know what everyone in it is feeling before you check on yourself.

In therapy we slow that scan down. Not to make you careless, but so your attention has somewhere else to go.

## Being the Reliable One

You became easy. Low maintenance. The one who did not add to the pile. It earned you a place, and it also taught you that your needs were a burden by default.

As an adult, that shows up as difficulty asking for anything, discomfort when someone does something kind for you, and a tendency to gravitate toward people who need a lot.

It also shows up in how you handle your own children, sometimes as fierce determination to do it differently and a fear that you are not managing it.

## Grieving the Parent You Needed

Your parent may still be alive and still be exactly the same, which means the grief has nowhere obvious to go. You are mourning something that never existed rather than something that ended.

Much of the work is accepting who they actually are, at the level where it stops costing you hope every holiday, and then deciding how much contact fits the life you want.

There is no requirement here to forgive, to cut off, or to reach any particular conclusion about them. We work on what you need, and let the relationship follow from that.
