Therapy for

# Codependency

You are the one who notices. Who anticipates. Who has already handled it before anyone else realized there was something to handle.

It has made you valuable to a lot of people. It has also left you with very little idea of what you want when nobody needs anything.

## An Identity Built on Being Needed

Being indispensable can feel like love, and for a long time it works. You are the reliable one, the steady one, the person who holds everything together.

The problem shows up in the quiet. On vacation, or after a breakup, or once the kids are grown, when there is nothing to manage and you do not recognize the person left over.

We spend real time on that question. Not what you should want, but what you actually notice yourself drawn to when no one is watching.

## The Fear Underneath the Helpfulness

Under most caretaking there is a quiet belief that the relationship holds only as long as you are useful. If you stop giving, they leave.

That belief usually got installed early, often in a house where someone was unwell, unpredictable, or preoccupied, and where being easy to have around was the safest thing to be.

Naming it out loud tends to be uncomfortable and enormously relieving. It reframes a personality trait as a strategy, and strategies can be updated.

## What Changes When You Stop Managing Everyone

Letting people handle their own consequences feels, at first, like neglect. Your nervous system will treat a normal boundary as an emergency for a while.

Some relationships will get better. Some people will be irritated that you are less available, which is uncomfortable information and also useful information.

Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we make space for that discomfort instead of waiting for it to pass, and we practice choosing based on what matters to you rather than on who might be upset.
