Therapy for

# Burnout

You used to care about this work, this family, this life. Now you are going through the motions of caring, and the gap between the two is starting to frighten you.

Burnout is not dramatic. It rarely announces itself. It looks like a competent person quietly emptying out.

## Tired Is Not the Same as Burned Out

Tired resolves with rest. A weekend, a few good nights, and you come back. Burnout does not. You can sleep ten hours and wake up already behind, already dreading, already done.

That is because burnout is not primarily an energy problem. It is what happens when output has exceeded meaning for too long. You have been drawing on reserves that were never refilled, and your system has started shutting down nonessential functions, including enthusiasm, patience, and hope.

Naming it accurately matters, because the advice for tiredness, rest more, tries less, is useless or worse against burnout.

## When Cynicism Arrives in Someone Who Cared

One of the clearest markers is a tone you do not recognize as yours. The eye roll in the meeting. The flatness when a client, patient, or child needs you. The private thought that none of it matters anyway.

Cynicism in a formerly caring person is not a character change. It is a protective crust over depletion, and underneath it there is usually grief: you cared enormously, it was not enough, and no one seemed to notice the cost.

We take the cynicism seriously as information rather than treating it as an attitude to correct.

## Why a Vacation Does Not Fix It

You have probably tried. Two weeks away, a genuine break, and by the second morning back you are exactly where you were, sometimes worse, because now you know rest is not the answer.

Burnout lives in the structure, not the week. The workload, the role, the invisible second shift, the identity built on being the one who copes. Returning to the same structure restores the same condition.

Our work looks at the whole arrangement: what you carry that was never yours, what you believe will happen if you put something down, and what a sustainable version of your life would actually require.
