# Blended Families 

You fell in love with a person and inherited a family, and nobody warned you how long the blending actually takes, or how much of it would fall on you.

The myth is that love makes it instant. The reality is that blended families are built slowly, and the building years can be genuinely hard on everyone in them.

## Loving a Child Who Did Not Choose You 

Your partner chose you. Their children did not, and they are allowed to take years to decide how they feel about you, on a schedule you cannot control.

You may be met with politeness, testing, silence, or open hostility, sometimes all four in one weekend. Meanwhile you are cooking for these children, driving them, funding their lives, and absorbing their grief about their family splitting.

The work here is patience with a strategy. We look at what connection with this particular child can realistically grow from, and how to protect yourself emotionally while it grows.

## Responsibility Without Authority 

The stepparent bind is well known to anyone in it: full responsibility, partial authority. You enforce a rule and get undermined. You stay out of discipline and get called checked out. There is no position that is safe.

Add an ex-spouse in the background and a partner caught between you and their children, and the marriage itself starts absorbing strain it was never designed for.

Therapy gives you a place to be honest about the resentment without it poisoning the household, and to work out with your partner what your role actually is rather than whoever is angriest that week deciding it.

## Loyalty Binds 

Children in blended families often feel that liking you is a betrayal of their other parent. They can be warm with you on Saturday and cold on Sunday after a handover, and it is not manipulation. It is a child doing painful arithmetic.

Understanding the bind helps, but it does not make being on the receiving end of it stop hurting, especially when you have been showing up for years.

We work on holding both: empathy for the child's position and honest limits around how you are treated, because a stepparent who swallows everything eventually burns out or walks.
