Guide

# Somatic & Body-Based Work

You can understand your anxiety perfectly and still feel it every morning in your chest. That is because a great deal of what we carry does not live in words. It lives in the shoulders that never drop, the breath that never quite completes, the stomach that tightens before a particular phone call. Somatic, body-based work brings that layer into the room.

## The Body Keeps Score

Long before you have a thought about a situation, your body has already responded to it. Heart rate, breath, muscle tone, posture — the nervous system is constantly reading the room and voting. For people who have lived through loss, chronic stress, or relationships where they had to stay braced, the body often stays on guard long after the danger has passed.

This is not a metaphor. It is physiology, and it is workable.

## Noticing Before Naming

In sessions, somatic work can be as simple as slowing down enough to notice: where do you feel that? What happens in your body when you say that sentence out loud? Often the noticing itself begins to shift something, because the body finally has an observer instead of only a driver.

From there we build capacity — learning to stay present with a difficult sensation a few seconds longer, so that feeling becomes tolerable rather than overwhelming.

## Why Insight Alone Often Does Not Shift Anxiety

Insight speaks to the thinking mind. Anxiety, grief and old bracing live one layer down. That is why you can know exactly why you are anxious and still be anxious. Body-based work, including breathwork and guided inner awareness, reaches the layer where the pattern actually lives.

I integrate body-based mindfulness and breathwork with psychodynamic and depth-oriented therapy, online for adults anywhere in California. If talking about it has never quite been enough, this may be the missing piece — reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
