# Depth Psychology 

Depth psychology is interested in what lives below the symptom. The anxiety, the sleeplessness, the relationship that keeps going the same way — these are treated not as malfunctions to be eliminated but as messages, often from parts of you that have not had a voice in a long time. It is slower work than skills-based therapy, and for many people it goes somewhere the practical kind could not reach.

## What Lives Below the Symptom 

A symptom is often the visible tip of something larger. The irritability that will not lift may be grief that never got its turn. The exhaustion may belong to a role you have been performing so long you forgot it was a role. Depth work asks what the symptom might be protecting, or pointing toward, rather than only how to make it stop.

This does not mean suffering is romantic or that you should keep it. It means that when we understand what a symptom is doing for you, we can find better ways to do that job.

## Dreams, Images and Metaphor 

The deeper layers of a person rarely speak in plain sentences. They speak in dreams, in the image that keeps returning, in the metaphor you reach for without thinking — it feels like I am drowning, like I am disappearing, like I am carrying everyone. In depth-oriented sessions we take those seriously. They are often more honest than the summary.

## For People Who Have Done the Practical Kind 

Many people come to this work after therapy that helped — but only so far. You learned the skills, you can name your triggers, and something essential still has not moved. That is often the right moment for depth work: when the tools are in place and the question has become not how do I cope, but who am I underneath all this coping.
